Day 177: Coco Before Chanel (September, 2)

Coco Before Chanel (Coco Avant Chanel) is a french production from 2009. Six years and I was still cautious to reach this biopic about the genius fashion designer Coco Chanel.

I know it's unlikely that someone would chose to watch this movie without knowing who Chanel is, although it is always a possibility. But even if we know who Chanel is and her fundamental role on the (fashion) world, it would be nice to see her story being told in a carefully manner at least.

The cinematography is beautiful, Audrey Tautou presented a big physical resemblance to Chanel, and Benoît Poelvoorde (from 3 Hearts) is interesting in his portrait of Étienne Balsan, a friend of Chanel for life. However, if I don't expect factual fidelity in a story base on true events (this seems to be the main topic on films for me on the last few days), this movie assumes too much, and forgets to tell a (good and admirable) story about an amazing, tenacious, innovative, nonconformist, controversial woman.
